The Future of Social Media Is Video (And Instagram Agrees)

July 22, 2021

You may or may not have heard yet, but Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, made some huge announcements in late June 2021 (in case you’re coming to us from The Future). Especially if you are a creative business owner like myself, this news is going to have a big impact on the way we share content in the future!

Changes coming to Instagram

In the video he released in June 2021, Adam shared the 4 primary ways Instagram is looking to make changes to the platform.

(1) Creators: They want to support creators who are trying to make a living. Insta recognizes the major shift in power, from institutions to individuals, across all industries and they’re totally here for it.

(2) Video: In all major social media platforms right now, video is exploding with growth. Instagram is no different!

(3) Shopping: The pandemic really accelerated the shift of commerce from offline to online, and Instagram now offers more ways to shop (as you’ve probably noticed).

(4) Messaging: The way people connect with their close friends has drastically changed in the last 5 years, moving from feed, product, and stories to primarily messaging.

Instagram ≠ photo sharing app

Did you know that, according to research, the #1 reason people use Instagram is for entertainment?? And you can bet your money that video is where people are watching. The competition out there is wild — between TikTok, Youtube, and other starter companies. Instagram will be experimenting with how they embrace video from a broad perspective, which is why you absolutely need to be aware of these changes. It will affect the algorithm and what other people in your space are doing.

Video is the future for your business, too!

As I have shared before, using videos on social media can really boost your brand awareness and drive engagement on your various media platforms and website. And as you hopefully have already concluded, video is the future for your business success, too!

You may be asking yourself how you’ll find the (extra) time to learn how to make video, and how you’ll ever keep up with all the ins and outs of these ever-changing platforms. Plus, creating videos that don’t go viral and don’t do anything for your business would suck — so why even start? Don’t worry. I get it. But I’ve also learned over the last year that video isn’t as hard as you’d think, and the platforms that are embracing video are actually a creative business owner’s BFF!
