Food Styling Trick: Writing with Popcorn

April 27, 2021

Hands up if you’ve ever visited Disney World in Florida or Disneyland in California! (Bonus points if you’ve been to Disney Tokyo or Disney Paris, because that would be a dream!)

If you’re a big Disney fan, or even if you’ve never been able to visit the theme parks in person, you probably know that the food is a huge part of the experience. Google “Disney food” and you’ll find lots of blogs and articles about the best treats to try at the theme parks.

Dole Whip. Mickey Ice cream bars. Pretzels. Turkey legs. Cakes, croissants, and churros, oh my! Let’s stop there before I make you (and myself) too hungry.

Why am I talking about delicious Disney treats? It all has to do with popcorn and a fun food styling trick I recently shared on Instagram and TikTok. Read on below to hear how I pull it off.

Tether your camera to a computer

Disney+ recently sent me an awesome mailer full of their iconic popcorn treats. You can find this popcorn sold at carts all over the theme parks, in yummy flavors like caramel, cheddar, churro, confetti, and kettle corn.

Disney+ kindly mailed me their popcorn to promote their new collection of short films, Pixar Popcorn. So, I wanted to do something fun with the popcorn and decided to “write” with it using an easy food styling trick!

For this project, I wanted to recreate the cute Pixar Popcorn logo using their actual popcorn. To get it to look just right, I pulled up an image of the logo on my computer to use it as a guide.

I set out a roll of hot pink seamless paper — my favorite choice for background paper — to use as the backdrop for the popcorn. I tethered my camera to my computer so I could actually see the image on the backdrop. (Wondering what tethering is? My online course might be for you!)

Then, all I had to do was arrange the popcorn on top of the overlay image on the paper! Pretty easy, right? It helped me nail down the Pixar Popcorn logo perfectly. If you have a specific image or word you’re trying to recreate with food, I suggest using this trick to help you do it!
