Behind the Scenes Photoshoot with Evan Williams

May 18, 2021

I have a treat for you all today that’s one part client case study and one part behind the scenes photoshoot! If you enjoy cocktails or Kentucky Bourbon in particular, then you’ve probably heard of famous Kentucky Bourbon distiller Evan Williams.

Evan Williams was looking for someone to create a playful, eye-catching stop-motion video to promote the launch of their new Instagram page. (Stay tuned for the launch of their page!) Playful stop-motion animation? Sounds right up my alley!

Bringing an idea to life

When I joined forces with Evan Williams, I set out to create a fun and attention-grabbing video that their Instagram audience would love.

It was tough to pick just one of their Bourbon flavors to spotlight in the stop-motion video, but I went with Evan Williams Peach for the bright color and how it looked when paired with one of their brand colors, purple.

Then, I thought about what would make a playful video, and got the idea to stack fresh peaches using stop-motion animation!

Slicing, stacking, and stop-motion with peaches

In the full stop-motion video, I have four deliciously round and plump peaches rolling into the camera shot and magically stacking themselves one on top of the other before turning into a bottle of Evan Williams Peach. How’d I do it?

“Round” is the keyword here. I realized that the peaches were nearly impossible to stack without using some secret food styling hack!

To get them to stack properly, I had to slice a flat spot on the top of each peach so they wouldn’t fall all over the place while shooting. And yes, that means the peaches you see rolling into frame at the beginning are not the same stacked peaches! I used eight peaches in all, not four.

Once the peaches are stacked, they transform into a bottle of Bourbon with the tap of a finger, then into two pretty cocktails. To make the stop-motion look smooth and cohesive, I had to elevate the glassware and make it as tall as the stacked peaches and bottle of Bourbon. I used one of my handy wood blocks — some of my favorite photo props! — to do this.

Oh, and one last behind-the-scenes secret to share: it took two people to shoot this video! Since a hand was needed in the final video (my hand, in fact) I had someone else help me shoot!
