I had seen some local press coverage on Randyland and its colorful curiosities, but as a South Hills native working in downtown Pittsburgh, it’s rare that I venture to the Northside. But thanks to RADical Days, which provide free entry to some of Pittsburgh’s most popular attractions, I decided to visit the Mattress Factory and just so happened to pass Randyland on the way there.
I am ALWAYS on the hunt for color and bright, happy spaces, so Randyland captured my attention immediately. Three stories of yellow, a lime green row house, and a neon map?! Those are just some of the features that stand out from the street. But it wasn’t until we stepped right into the Randyland gardens and were happily greeted by Randy himself, that I was able to take in some of the amazing details of this color paradise.
Randy has made it his mission to revitalize and enliven an up and coming neighborhood. He’s worked with volunteers to hand paint chairs, stairs, walls, doors and various other upcycled materials, and I am SO thankful for their efforts.
Check out all of the painted goodies I was oogling over:
