Desserts have definitely become one of my favorite things to style and photograph. There's nothing quite like the perfect ice cream drip or tiny little luscious crumbs in all of the right places. I also get a lot of questions about styling these sweet and perfect moments, so when SugarBear Hair reached out to partner on a blog post, I knew this would be perfect!
So you may be thinking- why would hair vitamins and styling mix? WELL, these just happen to be the cutest little gummy bears in the most gorgeous shade of minty blue. They also taste amazing and the brand loves to show them alongside sweet treats...making more sense now? :)
I picked out 5 of my favorite treats and am excited to share some tips and tricks!
1. Cakes & Icing
Cakes can be a super fun prop and there are so many hacks to make a great one for a photo! You can use styrofoam tiers (more info here), you can overhaul a grocery store find by smoothing the icing and adding fun pops of color like sprinkles, and ice cream cones, or you can bake your own and then use icing to decorate. If you're like me, and you use a lot of icing, it makes the most sense from a space and economic perspective to always only buy vanilla frosting and then use food dye to make it the shade of your dreams.
2. Ice Cream
A lot of stylists prefer to utilize fake ice cream for shoots (you can find plenty of recipes online!) but I am in love with the slow drips. My biggest hack is more of logistics measure. Make sure your surface is completely flat and easy to wipe clean. This is guaranteed to get messy. Paper will not work because the ice cream will soak right on through! I like to use plastic backgrounds and marble tiles that can be purchased at home depot for about $4 each. I also like to keep a fridge and pantry stocked with toppings like sprinkles, cherries, chocolate syrup, and in this case, SugarBear Hair!
Macaron styling is great but can also be very pricy! I prefer to utilize shelf stable macarons for styling (they can be found at specialty food stores and sometimes TjMaxx) because they can be reused over and over. To get them to perfectly stay in place without rolling away, grab some modeling clay and stick them into place.
I love styling donuts because they're so flexible! I usually just purchase plain donuts from a grocery store and then use vanilla icing dyed different colors as my frosting. I top it off with multiple different goodies like sprinkles, coconut flakes, and even Sugarbear Hair.
I love monochromatic candy shots, and always find the best selection at Party Stores actually! I think candy always looks best outside of a wrapper, and I have a real love for candy arranged into knolling shots. Knolling is the process of arranging related objects in parallel or 90-degree angles as a method of organization. Shots in this style are sometimes tagged as #thingsorganizedneatly on Instagram. It takes a lot of patience but the end result is well worth it!
